Human impact

For centuries the human impact on floodplain meadows has included cutting wood and brushwood, making hay and grazing. Carrying nutrients away with hay did not influence the productivity – the mud carried there by the floods caused the high nutrient level. Consequently, there was no reason to use artificial fertilising on floodplain meadows.
