Vegetation

The characteristic plant groups of coastal meadows are halophytes, i.e. plants that can tolerate the large salt content of coastal soils. According to the type of the coast four groups of communities of coastal meadows can be differentiated. Typical species are the common glasswort (Salicornia europea), black grass (Juncus gerardii), sea arrow grass (Triglochin maritimum), sea plantain (Plantago maritima), sea milk-wort (Glaux maritima), common couchgrass (Elymus repens), red fescue (Festuca rubra), annual sea-blite (Suaeda maritima), shore orache (Atriplex littoralis) and others.
